This past week was hard overall. Too much upheaval in my life that left me feeling frustrated and at the end of my wits. Someone I was working with for over a year suddenly turned hostile and decided not to work with me. I had to scramble to find someone else to take over the tasks and bring it to completion.
On Thursday, I went to fetch my daughter from her place. This was something that we had decided on a week ago and the fact that it was Valentine’s Day on Friday completely slipped my mind. When I realized, I told her that she could cancel and spend time with her friends instead. She said she wanted to spend it with me (sniffle sniffle).
After picking her up, we stopped by an Asian bakery and cafe to tuck into some dessert before dinner. We polished off some mango cake, peach oolong cake, and a banana pudding smoothie. The place was full of groups of women (and men!) celebrating the more recent addition to Hallmark holidays: Galentine’s Day!
Dessert and good company does wonders to one’s mood. After getting home, we cuddled together on the day bed and tried watching a movie but we both were tired after a long day and decided to call it a night. The next day was a busy day at work and before I knew it, it was time to drop her off at work. My dear friend N called in the evening to tell me how much she loved and cherished me. It was 2 in the morning for her and she woke up thinking of me! We made a quick visit to the temple with our neighbors and then after dropping off the kid, I was back home.
I got a call from my daughter asking if I’d be home for the rest of the night. When I said yes, she said, “Bye, gotta go,” and cut the call. I thought she was going to have something delivered. But knowing her, she wasn’t a last-minute person who would buy a gift as an afterthought. She always planned ahead of time.
When someone knocked at the door, I opened it expecting a delivery guy. But it was my daughter’s close friend and her mom with whom I’ve had brunch a couple of times. They brought me chocolates and flowers! We spent an hour or so chatting away happily.
Sometimes a totally unexpected gesture of kindness is what you need to remind you that love is all around and doesn’t have to be the romantic kind.
After a week from hell and feel completely broken, I have emerged thankful for the love that I receive from so many friends and my family. May all the love you give out come back to you a thousand fold. Love you all, my readers!
